More than 4000 years ago started the history of Mdina. Mdina has been called by different names over the past years. The name of the city has always been changing depending on who ruled the city. Some of the nobles families that ruled the city, were descendants of the Norman, Sicilian, and Spanish overlords, who made Mdina their home during the 12th century.
Nowadays, Mdina is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. The old city walls and extraordinary mixes of medieval and Baroque architecture make the whole city unique. Rabat also played an important role in Malta’s past. When it comes to cultural heritage, this is one of the main sources: the sites and archaeological relics attested the importance of the city during Roman times. Religious communities have been established in the districts of Rabat for centuries. Dominicans and Augustiner are still thriving in their spacious monasteries to meet the religious needs of parishioners in their churches. Nowadays, the city is a trade center and serves as a market. It can also be seen on a tourist map since the archaeological and historical sites are well known. The Roman Villa (Domus Romana), the Catacombs and St. Paul’s Grotto are some of the most beautiful churches and monasteries.
